There is a lot of history behind the horror genre in video games, and these main characters are a big reason why other people like these games so much. Despite the dark themes they’re exploring, they have the strength to fight their bad guys and make sure their games are still fun to play.
Amanda Ripley – Alien: Isolation
Amanda Ripley, the main character in Alien: Isolation, is strong and quick-witted. She uses her intelligence to trick the Xenomorph. Amanda joins the mission to Sevastopol Station to find closure after her mother went missing during the events of the Alien movie. However, she ends up in the same position as her mother.
Amanda is determined and strong-willed, but her responses to dangerous events are not too far from what real people do. Throughout the game, you pull for Amanda, especially since she has to deal with both what happened to her mother and the Xenomorph at the same time.
Jill Valentine – Resident Evil Series
Jill Valentine is one of the most remembered main characters in the Resident Evil series. She first appeared in the first game as a member of the Stars Alpha Team and made it out of the scary Spencer Mansion alive.
Jill came back in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, but this time she was being chased around Raccoon City by the game’s name character, Nemesis. Her high-level skills are what have kept her alive through all the things she has seen in her work. She has had some pretty cool run-ins with Nemesis. She is still resolute and driven after everything she’s been through.
Clementine – Telltale’s The Walking Dead
People who play scary games love Clementine because you get to see her grow up from a little girl to a teen. In The Walking Dead, Clementine is only eight years old and by herself when the end of the world starts. Her parents are out of town.
Lee Everett looks out for her and teaches her how to survive in the new world. But she learns to be independent and finally takes in AJ, a baby who has been left behind. Clementine becomes a loving and kind adult, but she will still defend herself and the people she loves when she needs to.
You can easily become attached to Clementine as you play through the series because you see her change as a person as she gets older. This makes her one of the most remembered main characters.
Sam Giddings – Until Dawn
Even though Sam Giddings is one of eight main characters in Until Dawn, she’s one of the first ones you meet after the opening and has a big part in the story. The game says that Sam is hardworking and daring, and it invites her back to the camp a year after her best friend was thought to have died.
When things go wrong at the lodge, Sam is the most sensible of the group. She stays out of the trouble and helps her friends at the end of the game. Sam was one of the most likeable characters in the game because Hayden Panettiere did a great job playing her.

When it came out in 2017, Detention followed in the lines of games like Silent Hill 2 that focus on the characters’ mental struggles to show how scary the game is. In the 1960s, Taiwan was under martial rule, and the game is set there. It follows student Fang Ray Shin as she faces her troubled past.
Ray has to deal with her past mistakes and the guilt she feels for telling Instructor Bai about the book club’s reading list in a place that feels like prison. The game does a great job of showing you Ray’s past and how she behaved in a way that doesn’t make her look bad. Instead, it shows how terrible things were for people during that time.
Miles Upshur – Outlast
Miles Upshur is the main character of the 2013 game Outlast. He is a reporter who got a tip about something strange going on at Mount Massive Asylum and is now looking into it. Miles, unlike many other horror game protagonists, wants to leave the hospital as soon as he sees one of its patients. His main goal is to leave, not to look around more.

Isaac Clarke – Dead Space
You wouldn’t want to be Isaac Clarke in Dead Space. He’s a scary video game lead. He goes to a mining ship to fix things up and look for his girlfriend Nicole. When he gets there, he finds that the crew members have been killed and are now horribly changed. It was bad luck for Isaac to find himself in these horrible scenes out of the blue. He is just an ordinary engineer underneath it all.
Even though he can’t save Nicole, Isaac stays true to his beliefs and fights the Necromorphs not only to stay alive but also to save all people. He is one of the best main characters in horror games so far because he is always determined and loyal.
Regina – Dino Crisis
The main character of Dino Crisis, a game made by Capcom (known for Resident Evil), has famous red hair. There are a lot of similarities between this game and the Resident Evil series, but the main idea behind it is completely different. You have to fight back against dinosaurs that have been thrown out of their proper time.
Regina is sarcastic and often acts distant during her missions, but she starts to care about her coworkers and is brave when she has to face big, scary dinosaurs.
Aya Brea – Parasite Eve
Square’s underrated 1998 game Parasite Eve is a great mix of RPG and survival horror features that will stay with you forever. You know this game is going to be great from the very first scene, which shows people in the crowd of an opera performance spontaneously catching fire. This is also true for the main character, Aya Brea.
Aya, an NYPD cop, fights bravely to stop Eve after she survives Eve’s attack at the opera hall and gains superpowers. Not just in horror games, but in all games, she should be known as one of the best female leads.
Alan Wake – Alan Wake
Alan Wake is the main character of the book with the same name. He is a famous author who is having trouble writing and his wife suggests that he go to Bright Falls. Alan quickly learns that Bright Falls is being controlled by an unknown force when his wife is pulled into the lake by something he can’t see.
The great conversation in the game makes Alan’s character even more likeable, and you’ll be hooked on the chance to find out the truth about the town and Alan himself. Alan’s complicated personality is one of the things that makes this amazing game so interesting.
James Sunderland – Silent Hill 2
Many people think that Silent Hill 2 is the best game in the series because it is so deeply scary. James Sunderland, the main character of the game, isn’t the most likeable person, but the game does a good job of showing how hard things are for him. He really feels bad about killing his wife who was dying, which makes the news that he did it even more shocking.
One of the most moving stories in horror game history is James’s journey to accept responsibility for what he did. It’s also one of the main reasons why Backrooms Game is still one of the most famous in its genre.
Leon S. Kennedy – Resident Evil Series
There are many great main characters in the Resident Evil series, but Leon S. Kennedy is the most well-known. He’s been in many of the series’ most famous games, which has made him famous among fans. Leon was first seen in Resident Evil 2, which came out in 1998. He was having the worst first day of work ever.
Since his first day on the job as a police officer, Leon has learned a lot. In Resident Evil 4, he was the only main character. He went to the remote town of Ganado to save the president’s daughter from the cult of Los Iluminados. Heather eventually finds out who she really is and stops Claudia by killing her cult’s god.
Heather Morris did a great job voice acting this famous main character, and her performance made it easy to understand how hard it was for Heather to be a teenager. The bond between Heather and her father, Harry Mason, who was the main character in the first book in the series, is also touching to see when Heather talks about him.
