These games are the ancestors of fear and the first to use disgusting images. They pave the way for horror.
A lot of people enjoy being scared. Not only are scary games great for Halloween, but they’re also great for when you just want to get into the spirit of the holiday.
Since the beginning, the horror game field has been steadily growing. Since then, some really cool games have scared people all over the world. But which of these are the best games, the “creme de la creme” of horror, the ones that will scare you long after the credits roll?
Five Nights At Freddy’s
Five Nights at Freddy’s is a cult classic among players of all generations, even though it was made for young adults. People who work as security guards at pizza places might not seem like the most interesting people.
That seems very confusing, though, as anyone who has played the game can tell you. Now that it’s famous enough to go beyond its original form, FNAF is easy to enjoy as a book, a board game, or even a movie. Animated things will always be strange to you.
Fear
You’re used to having strange encounters with things that go bump in the night as a member of the First Encounter Assault Recon team. But in the story of Fear, the enemy you face is nothing like what you thought it would be.
There’s an interesting mix of FPS and horror in this game. Fear is one of the few games that can give you a lot of tools and still make you jump. It’s really amazing how quickly you’ll go back to feeling like a scared kid after feeling like a great soldier. This is a great first horror book if you want to get into the genre slowly.
Phasmophobia
The newest game on this list, Phasmophobia, is just as good as the old ones when it comes to how it changes the way horror games are played online. Up to three of your friends and you are supposed to look into a supernatural event at one of several places.
You’ll need all of your courage, knowledge, and different tools to make it through the fight, but each one is unforgettable because of how scary it is. If you play with your friends, you might feel less scared, but Phasmophobia can make you all feel scared and alone.
Fatal Frame
For those in some parts of the world, Fatal Frame (or Project Zero) is a horror game from the early 2000s that didn’t hold back. Fans of The Ring and The Grudge will notice right away how much this game is like those movies, which only adds to how creepy it is.
Now you can see how parts of this game have been used to make newer games in the last couple of decades. Holding a camera up against ghost after ghost that all want you dead never seems to get old.
Alien: Isolation
There has always been a great balance between science fiction and horror in the Alien movies. Even if you didn’t grow up with the movies, Alien: Isolation has a lot that makes it worth being on the list.
It’s hard to forget this game because it has a great story, classic horror monsters, and fun ways to play. A cool thing about this game is the way the sounds are put together. Having nothing but quiet is depressing, and it’s even worse when a noise or the beeping of your radar lets you know that something is closing in on you.
Outlast
Most of us would think it would be a bad idea to spend the night at a crazy hospital in the middle of nowhere while strange things are going on, but Miles in Outlast didn’t. There have been more games in the series since the first one, but each one has been better than the last.
I really like how the game makes you feel helpless and surrounded, and it doesn’t take long before you feel like you’re holding Miles’ camera. This is one of those games that has completely raised the bar for scary games.
Amnesia
For many years now, the Amnesia series has been at the top of discussions about scary video games. There’s a feeling of fear that runs through the whole series, even though it takes place in a few different places.
There are a lot of different themes in the Amnesia games, ranging from scary monsters to mental illness to being alone. But they all work well together. In this area, that’s what makes them so well-known.
Dead Space
Even without technology going wrong, space is already a scary place to be because it is empty and full of danger. Dead Space is a game with zombies that have an interesting twist. No matter how long you’ve been a fan of the series, Wordle Unlimited is a game that has helped horror stay popular.
It’s so different from other games because of how the story and gameplay work together to make it so scary. It turns the Ishimura spaceship into something that looks like a standard scary house story and then makes you walk through the whole thing.
Silent Hill
Even though it’s been around for a long time, the Silent Hill series is still a good choice for horror fans. The setting of Silent Hill makes the game so much better. There are scary monsters, strange events, and normal American towns that have been messed up by the hellish scene going on around them.
On top of that, the story weaves together hope and fear, and the characters are broken, but you still root for them. For sure, a game is good if someone who has never played it can name one of the monsters right away.
Resident Evil
You must know about the Resident Evil games by now, even if you’re not a gamer. This genre has grown into a kingdom of horror, with movies, books, merchandise, and games. The humble roots of Raccoon City have led to a horror series that has tried many different types of scary stories. Even though it doesn’t always take itself too seriously, it’s always been there to scare people and make people laugh.
You can’t go wrong when you add in memorable personalities and good gameplay. You can thank Resident Evil for a lot of things that keep zombies fresh in the horror genre.
